“Teaching has always been my way of paying forward a gift that changed my own life. Years ago, when I was a young adult working full-time, I wanted to pursue my passion for painting. I discovered John Osborne's Wednesday and Thursday evening oil painting classes. His classes made quality instruction accessible to people who, like me, balanced careers and countless daytime commitments. John’s classes opened a door for me, and ever since, I have felt a responsibility to hold that door open for others. If it were not for John, I would not be doing what I do today.

That experience shaped not only the artist I became but also the teacher I strive to be. I believe every student arrives with different goals, interests, strengths, apprehensions, and aspirations. Some simply want to enjoy a weekly painting class, while others seek rigorous, comprehensive training with professional ambitions. My responsibility is not to define success for them, but to understand where they want to go and help them get there.

Over the years, my evening classes have attracted individuals balancing careers, families, and countless responsibilities while making time for something they love. I have tremendous respect for that commitment, and I believe their time deserves to be taken seriously. For that reason, I set a high standard because I believe people are capable of far more than they often imagine. Growth requires hard work, a willingness to embrace discomfort, and the courage to step outside one's comfort zone. Those challenges lead to lasting rewards, and watching those rewards unfold has become one of the greatest joys of teaching.

Some former students have gone on to build successful artistic careers, while others have simply discovered they were capable of creating work they never believed possible. Both outcomes are equally meaningful because success is defined by the individual's goals, not mine.

Just as rewarding is the community that has grown from these classes. Friendships have formed, artists continue to encourage one another, and a network of kindred spirits inspires and supports its members long after class ends. Creating that sense of belonging is every bit as rewarding as teaching technical skills because learning flourishes in an environment of mutual respect and encouragement.

At my core, I believe everyone has something meaningful to say through their work. Every artist has a unique voice waiting to be discovered and strengthened. My role is to help students connect their abilities with that voice, giving them the knowledge, confidence, and discipline to pursue their own goals and dreams.

Teaching is both a privilege and an honor because it allows me to pass on what was once so generously given to me. If I can help someone discover what they are truly capable of, then I honor and continue the legacy that made my own journey possible.”
