A Visit to see Sargent and Paris at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC

Earlier in the week I had the privilege of attending a special Met Members preview of the Sargent and Paris exhibit, getting an exclusive look before it opens to the general public. The exhibition showcases some of Sargent’s most famous works, including Madame X, the Oyster Gatherers, and Fumée d’Ambergris.

It was a truly amazing experience to be able to admire the artwork up close without the usual crowds. It felt like I had a front-row seat to the beauty of Sargent’s creations.

As I walked through the galleries, I came across several pencil sketches. There were numerous pencil studies Sargent did of Madame X. Although simple, they were incredibly effective in capturing gesture and mood. I was also amazed to discover an unfinished copy of the Madame X oil painting! It was a delightful surprise to see this piece I never knew existed. I found it fascinating to observe Sargent's technique and skill, especially in the way he depicted the hands (see pictured).

There were several works I hadn’t seen in person, like the intimate smaller sized full length interior portraits so it was incredible to witness their size and to see Sargent’s brushstrokes upon the paintings! There was one portrait in particular that appeared to be unfinished, though it was signed and dedicated to the sitter. It was intriguing. Why was it unfinished? What were the circumstances surrounding this painting? I will have to do some research and report back on my findings.

The exhibition was beautiful in its presentation, though my only wish was that the lighting were a tad bit brighter. In some respects it felt like the rooms were candle-lit, and perhaps that was the effect the curator was attempting to achieve!

It was a magical day spent in the presence of genius and truly inspirational. I am always in awe of the Met, and we are blessed to have such an amazing Fine Art museum in NYC.

I highly recommend viewing this exhibition. You will most certainly enjoy it.
